During the month of February, we complete our journey through the Epiphany season and prepare for Lent. At the beginning of the month, we celebrate Candlemass (Feb. 2), also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple and the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Feast commemorates the compliance of Mary and Joseph with Mosaic Law (Leviticus 12:2-8). Forty days after the birth of Christ, Mary redeemed her first-born from the temple and was purified by the prayer of Simon in the presence of Anna, the prophetess (Luke 2:22 cf.). Before Holy Eucharist on this day, beeswax candles are blessed for use in the church during the year.

The pre-Lent “-gesima” Sundays (Septuagesima, Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima) mark the coming of Lent, culminating with Shrove Tuesday on February 28 and the beginning of Lent the following day on Ash Wednesday. As is our custom at Good Shepherd,we will hold a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper at 6 p.m. in the parish hall. The public is welcome to join us for this traditional meal of pancakes, sausages, apple sauce, and real New Hampshire maple syrup. There is no charge.
